Quick Start Guide to Homeschooling in Utah

4 Simple Steps to Start

1. File an exemption: Submit an exemption to your local school district. Download exemption form here.

2. Contact public school: Contact your local public school to let them know your child will be home schooling.

3. Choose a curriculum: Pick any curriculum that fits your child's needs and learning style. Utah law allows full flexibility. Find additional curriculum help here.

4. Plan your schedule: Create a daily routine that works for your family.

Legal Basics

In Utah, if you decide to home school, you'll need to submit an exemption to your local school district. Once that's done, you’re in charge of your child’s education and have the freedom to choose what and how they learn. The best part? There’s no state-mandated testing, end of year assessments, home visits, or portfolio reviews.

Curriculum Choices

Utah gives parents the freedom to choose any curriculum that best suits their child’s learning style. Go for a program that matches your teaching style and your kid’s learning preferences—whether that’s something structured or more flexible and hands-on. Try to strike a balance between solid academics and fun, engaging material that keeps your child curious. Don’t worry about following every lesson to the letter; feel free to tweak or skip parts that don’t work for you. And if you’re just starting out, it’s totally okay to keep it simple and adjust as you get the hang of it. Don’t be afraid to experiment and switch things up if needed.

Take a look at our curriculum page for plenty of resources to help you find the perfect fit for your family.
